Marine Atlantic announced today that two contracts for the site preparation and construction of a new terminal building in North Sydney have been awarded. The successful contractors, both with strong ties to Cape Breton, were Joneljim Construction and Rocklin Construction (a division of Doran Construction).
The proposed new terminal building, including design, site preparation and construction, is estimated to cost approximately $20 million. The building will be constructed at a location on the opposite side of the marshalling yard from the existing terminal building, adjacent to downtown businesses. The new building will be modern, efficient, environmentally friendly, and offer new amenities such as a commercial driver seating lounge area. It will also offer customers closer access to downtown North Sydney business amenities. The new terminal building is expected to be open and operational during fiscal year 2015-2016.
"We look forward to working with these local contractors to build our new terminal building and continue our agenda of positive change at Marine Atlantic," said Paul Griffin, President and CEO of Marine Atlantic. "We are excited with the opportunities that this new building will present and the improved level of customer service and amenities that will be available to our customers. This is the latest in a long list of infrastructure upgrades that have been ongoing at all three of our ports during the past 18 months."
Other North Sydney projects including the construction of a new stevedore building, renovations to the docks, upgrading and expanding the marshalling yard, and improving the electrical infrastructure system were recently completed. In October 2012, a new administration and warehouse facility officially opened at 65 Memorial Drive.
The Government of Canada's 5-year investment in Marine Atlantic is facilitating the Corporation's revitalization program designed to better serve customers through fleet renewal, shore-based infrastructure renewal and business process change.
