Bridge Removal Advisory

Commercial customers are advised of operational changes relating to the demolition of the bridge on the Terminal Service Road leading to Marine Atlantic’s Port aux Basques Terminal.

A contract to remove the structure has been awarded by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and work is anticipated to take place over the next several weeks.

During this construction phase, there will be periods when a portion of the drop trailer storage area, known as the upper yard and located on the other side of the bridge, will be inaccessible. Customers with drop trailers will continue to be advised upon arrival at the terminal property where to drop off or pick up their units.

This temporary reduction in the amount of available drop trailer storage space may mean additional congestion at the Port aux Basques property as well as an increased potential for lot closures during any schedule impacts. Drop trailer customers are asked to proceed with caution and follow the directions of staff, while picking up their units as soon as possible after arrival.

The bridge has been closed to traffic since November 2023 after an inspection showed deteriorating conditions of the structure. Since that time, access to and from the terminal has been solely via the Trans-Canada Highway.

The province has announced that planning for a replacement structure is underway with construction anticipated to take place in 2025. Further information about any construction impacts will be shared when available.

We thank all customers for their patience during this time.
