2016-17 Schedule and Rate Structure Now Available for Booking
World class tourism destinations, friendly hospitality, rich cultural traditions, culinary delights: what do all of these things have in common? They reflect just a small part of what Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia have to offer. And now that Marine Atlantic’s 2016-17 schedule and rate structure have been released, you can make your bookings for travel between the two provinces until March 31, 2017.
As part of our new schedule, the popular morning and overnight crossings will continue through Port aux Basques, while the early evening crossings will continue through Argentia. Commercial customers will still experience dedicated crossings and an increased number of restricted crossings to ship their products across the Cabot Strait.
As part of our new rate structure, effective April 1, passenger fares, vehicle fares and the drop trailer management fee will increase by 2.6 per cent. The tariff rate adjustments are necessary to reflect the continuing increased costs associated with materials, supplies and labour and ensure a strong and reliable service for customers. Marine Atlantic will not be increasing cabin prices or the security fee at this time.
We continue to get the question as to why the low price of fuel hasn’t decreased the fuel surcharge. The reality is that our Corporation continues to move to more expensive marine diesel fuel to meet new environmental regulations by the year 2018-19. While lower international fuel prices, as well as the Corporation’s ongoing fuel savings measures are stabilizing the current fuel surcharge, future increases will be necessary to reflect the costs associated with purchasing the more expensive fuel. It is anticipated that significant increases to the fuel surcharge will be required as we continue to transition to 100 per cent marine diesel on all Marine Atlantic ferries, with current projections indicating an approximate 5.0 percent increase in next year’s fuel surcharge rate.
