International Women's Day
“Never underestimate the power of a woman,” said Nellie McClung, one of The Famous Five (along with Henrietta Muir Edwards, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby) who launched the historic “Persons Case” in 1927 to allow women to sit on the Canadian Senate.
International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration. The theme for International Women’s Day is Women’s Empowerment Leads to Equality.
Every day, women make their mark in remarkable ways on all facets of our culture & society. Having a diverse workforce enhances many aspects of business including access to different markets, increased productivity and innovation, capturing employee talent and improving the bottom line.
Studies have shown diverse teams—that is, teams comprised of people of different genders, races, and backgrounds—promote creativity, foster critical thinking, and tend to make better, more thoughtful decisions because they consider a wider range of perspectives. Having an inclusive culture at the workplace has been convincingly linked with productivity, profitability, employee commitment and retention.
International Women’s Day is a time for all Canadians to celebrate the progress that has been made toward equality for women and their full participation in all aspects of society. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the barriers that remain and to take action to overcome them. Here at Marine Atlantic, we are proud to employ women in traditional and non-traditional roles as we work to strengthen our business performance.
Today, Marine Atlantic recognizes and commends all the strong, capable and amazing women, who help make up our workforce. We encourage everyone to reflect on those women who inspire you in your workplace and life and tag them in social media with #youareempowerment.
