Marine Atlantic – Your Gateway to Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Did you know that Newfoundland and Labrador is home to three UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Sites? Did you know that all three of these sites, Gros Morne National Park, L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site and Red Bay National Historic Site can all be accessed when you travel through Port aux Basques on Newfoundland’s west coast? Every year, thousands of tourists travel to Newfoundland and Labrador to experience these internationally recognized sites and Marine Atlantic plays a key role in the journey.
Your voyage from North Sydney, NS to Port aux Basques, NL places you at the gateway to one of the world’s most spectacular driving tours. Follow the Viking Trail up Newfoundland’s western coast, through to the beauty of Gros Morne National Park with its million-year-old rock formations and incredible inland fjords. Continue up the coast to the awesome L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, where North America’s only Viking settlement reaching back over 1000 years, still buzzes with the activity of re-enactments and Norse lore. Then on to the Basque Whaling Station at Red Bay, Labrador, a National Historic Site in its own right. Here the Basque whalers from Spain plied their trade in North America’s very first industry. The Interpretation Centre here will guide you through the story of the Europeans who first made an industrious link to this continent and opened the door to permanent settlement.
In recognition of these important and unique sites, Marine Atlantic will begin advertising in select Canadian markets promoting a driving vacation to western Newfoundland and southern Labrador. The goal is to increase overall traffic by showcasing the province’s world heritage sites with the motto, “One Voyage. One Gateway. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.”
This is the Power of Three – a jaw-dropping UNESCO trio that starts with one Marine Atlantic voyage.
