Stena Grecia/Atlantic Freighter

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

In this week’s blog posting we highlight the Stena Grecia/Atlantic Freighter which served the Port aux Basques-North Sydney crossing from 1986-2010.

Originally chartered by Marine Atlantic under the name Stena Grecia, the vessel was later purchased by the Corporation and renamed the Atlantic Freighter. Used primarily as a freight vessel between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, the ship measured 154 metres and could travel at speeds of up to 15 knots. During the early 1990s, the vessel was given recognition for the role it played in serving two supply missions in the Persian Gulf during the Gulf War.
