The Port aux Basques Terminal

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

In this blog posting we highlight the Port aux Basques terminal, which has been servicing the Port aux Basques-North Sydney crossing since 1898. Beginning with a rail and ferry service, the people of Port aux Basques and surrounding area have played a vital role in connecting the Island of Newfoundland with Mainland Canada.

For over 115 years, Port aux Basques has welcomed millions of passengers and tourists. In addition, millions of tonnes of essential freight has travelled through the town on its way to every single person in every single community in the province. It’s no wonder this charming town on the southwest coast has become known as the Gateway to Newfoundland.
