Proud of our History - Lewisporte, NL

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Strategically located in central Newfoundland at the mouth of the Exploits River in Notre Dame Bay, Lewisporte has played a significant role in connecting the people and communities of Newfoundland and Labrador for many decades. With available access to early railway lines, the community became a shipping hub for the coastal Newfoundland service along the northeast and central coastline, and later became the main shipping port for the Labrador service. Marine Atlantic and its predecessors operated the service until 1997, when the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador assumed responsibility for the operations.
