Proud of our History - MV Stena Grecia/MV Atlantic Freighter

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Originally chartered by Marine Atlantic under the name MV Stena Grecia, the vessel was later purchased by the Corporation and renamed the MV Atlantic Freighter. Used primarily as a freight vessel between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, the ship measured 154 metres and could travel at speeds of up to 15 knots. During the early 1990s, the vessel was given recognition for the role it played in serving two supply missions in the Persian Gulf during the Gulf War.

After 94 Throwback Thursday postings, we have highlighted a number of vessels, terminals and communities that have played a significant role in the evolution of the ferry and transportation sector in Atlantic Canada. We are happy to have shared a selection of unique historical photographs that have remained in our archives for several decades. We are also very thankful for the contribution and feedback from the many people who read our blogs each week and provided their knowledge and photos.

While this marks the final Throwback Thursday blog related to vessel/terminal photos, this is not the end of our Throwback Thursday feature.
