Proud of our History - the Newfoundland Dockyard

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Constructed as a facility to help build, repair, and maintain vessels experiencing the harsh North Atlantic climate, the facility was used in the maintenance of the original coastal boats and eventually the Marine Atlantic fleet, as well as other vessels requiring the yard’s services. The facility’s location was considered ideal for the local marine industry and the skilled labour present at the yard was recognized as world-class.

We hope you enjoy these photos showing a changing landscape in the marine ship repair industry and some of the many vessels that utilized the dockyard’s facilities and services.

As always, we welcome your photos for posting in a future blog. Please email your photos to [email protected]  including any facts such as the date and location.
