Proud of our History - SS Baccalieu

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Named after the uninhabited Island of Baccalieu located at the head of Conception Bay on Newfoundland’s east coast, the SS Baccalieu was the sister ship to the SS Burgeo. Measuring 242 feet in length, the vessel could travel at speeds of 12 knots, carry 122 passengers and transport significant volumes of freight per crossing. It was considered a vital link to connecting coastal communities during its time in service.
