Proud of our History - SS Burgeo

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Named after the community on the southwest coast of Newfoundland, the SS Burgeo spent many years connecting coastal Newfoundland communities and provided the Port aux Basques-North Sydney service for a number of years following the tragic sinking of the SS Caribou in 1942. Measuring 242 feet in length, the vessel could travel at speeds of 12 knots, carry 122 passengers and transport significant volumes of freight per crossing.
