Proud of our History - SS Northumberland

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

A predecessor to the Borden, PEI, and Cape Tormentine, NB, service, the SS Northumberland travelled between Charlottetown, PEI, and Pictou, NS, and Summerside, PEI, and Pointe du Chene, NB, before the more modern service was established. With triple expansion engines and 2500 horsepower, the steamship helped transport passengers and goods across the Northumberland Strait for almost three decades.

As always, we welcome your photos for posting in a future blog. Please email your photos to [email protected]  including any facts such as the date and location.

In next week’s blog posting, we highlight the Argentia, NL, ferry terminal which has served customers since 1967.
