The SS Bar Haven

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

In this week’s blog posting we highlight the SS Bar Haven, which served the people of coastal Newfoundland communities from 1948 to 1973. A vessel that transported food and supplies to residents in remote and isolated areas of the province, it was named after an island (and now resettled community) located on the northwestern side of Placentia Bay.

We hope you enjoy these photos showing a vessel that was a lifeline for the many residents who relied on its service for the 25 years it operated.
