The SS Charlottetown

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

In this week’s blog posting we highlight the SS Charlottetown which serviced the Prince Edward Island-New Brunswick crossing from 1931-1941.

Named after the capital of Prince Edward Island, the vessel had capacity to transport sixteen railcars, 800 passengers and an automobile deck capable of carrying 45 vehicles. The 324 foot long vessel was considered an interprovincial bridge by many Prince Edward Islanders. Described as the most powerful ice-breaker ferry in the world at the time, this ocean-going steamship was well-respected for the increase in traffic that could be transported between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
