The SS Northern Ranger

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

In this week’s blog posting we highlight the SS Northern Ranger that serviced coastal Newfoundland and Labrador communities from 1936-1966.

At 1366 tons and 228 feet in length, it was a large steamer when introduced in 1936. With the ability to carry 120 passengers and freight destined for numerous coastal communities, it represented a new way of transporting passengers and goods to residents. The SS Northern Ranger marked the beginning of larger vessels serving coastal communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
