Staying Safe During Your Crossing

At Marine Atlantic, safety is our first priority.  We believe the health and well-being of our employees and passengers is our greatest responsibility.  That’s why we’re committed to maintaining a ‘safety first’ culture.

For the safety of you, your family, other passengers and our employees while travelling with Marine Atlantic, please review and follow these few safety rules and tips to help make our journey a safer one.

For your safety and security:

Arriving at our terminals

  • We comply with the Canada Shipping Act. In accordance with the Act, recreational vehicles carrying propane must have cylinder valves fully closed before boarding the vessel.  You must declare all propane and gasoline products you are carrying and you will be issued a tag for each.
    • This tag must be affixed to your tank once it has been shut off. No gas appliances may be operated while onboard.
  • Always watch for moving traffic while on Marie Atlantic properties.
  • Be sure to use designated cross walks at terminals when you’re crossing vehicle lanes.

Boarding our vessels

  • Be aware of your surroundings while on the vehicle decks during the boarding and disembarking of the vessel and please refrain from using your cell phones during this time.
  • Vehicle decks are slippery when wet, please don’t rush.
  • Watch for any tripping hazards on the vehicle deck such as the chains used to secure vehicles and especially raised thresholds between the vehicle lanes.
  • We ask passengers to wear comfortable, flat shoes on our vehicle decks. This means no heels, open toes, Croc-style shoes or flip flops.
  • Due to safety and limited space, we ask you to not open or collapse your strollers while on a vessel’s car deck.

Onboard

  • Passengers are not permitted to return to the vehicle deck once the vessel leaves port.
  • Please watch the safety video shown in several locations on the vessel before departure.
  • Smoking is prohibited in all areas of the vessel except in designated smoking areas on outside decks.
  • Passengers are not permitted to sleep on the floor.

Disembarking

  • When disembarking, do not start your vehicle until directed to do so by a Marine Atlantic employee, or when the vehicle directly in front of you begins to move. Vehicle exhaust is highly toxic and can quickly accumilate as vehicles wait to leave the vessel.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility thanks for doing your part – Stay safe and have a pleasant voyage!
