Why can’t I return to the vehicle decks during the crossing?
At Marine Atlantic, the safety and security of our passengers and employees is our top priority. Our policies are focused on protecting the well-being of everyone who uses our service or visits our terminal properties.
We often receive inquiries from passengers as to why they are not permitted to return to the vehicle decks while the vessel is at sea. We recognize that this can sometimes be an inconvenience; however, protecting the safety and security of passengers and employees is our top consideration. While at sea, commercial cargo or vehicles may shift and potentially injure someone on the deck. Also, in the event of an emergency, it is important to have everyone mustered in one area on the passenger decks to ensure everyone can be accounted for in an accurate and timely manner. Returning to the vehicle deck is very dangerous and could potentially endanger passengers, crew or others should an emergency arise, especially if that area is inaccessible due to a potential hazard. This policy is strictly enforced.
From a security perspective, Marine Atlantic is responsible for transporting a high value of goods and merchandise on every crossing. We cannot allow cargo or personal belongings to be compromised by individuals wanting to return to the vehicle decks.
When travelling with us, please remember to take all necessary belongings (including medications) with you before leaving your vehicle. If you have a pet, we recommend you take advantage of the designated kennel area, however, if you choose to leave your pet in your vehicle, please ensure it has everything it needs during the trip. You will not be permitted to return to the vehicle decks during the crossing.
We thank you for your co-operation.
