North Sydney Terminal Building Achieves Silver LEED Certification
North Sydney, NS - Through significant environmental and energy efficient planning and design work, Marine Atlantic's North Sydney terminal building has achieved LEED® Silver certification from the Canada Green Building Council, indicating that the facility is a leader in environmental and energy design. This designation demonstrates that the building has achieved high performance in key areas of human and environmental health including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
In recent years, Marine Atlantic has placed a renewed focus on environmental initiatives. Some of these have included joining Green Marine, enhancing waste management strategies, strengthening the fuel monitoring and usage program, and shifting to cleaner marine diesel fuel. In addition, as part of the construction of the new North Sydney terminal building, the Corporation implemented a number of environmentally friendly and energy efficient designs into the structure that will save energy and encourage a more positive environmental footprint for the present and the future.

Through the design and planning stage of the North Sydney terminal building, Marine Atlantic focused on initiatives such as energy efficient lighting, water efficient landscaping, providing electric vehicle plugins, energy efficient heating, low emitting paints and adhesives, water conservation, and indoor air monitoring.
