North Sydney Terminal Building Achieves Silver LEED Certification

North Sydney, NS - Through significant environmental and energy efficient planning and design work, Marine Atlantic's North Sydney terminal building has achieved LEED® Silver certification from the Canada Green Building Council, indicating that the facility is a leader in environmental and energy design. This designation demonstrates that the building has achieved high performance in key areas of human and environmental health including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

In recent years, Marine Atlantic has placed a renewed focus on environmental initiatives. Some of these have included joining Green Marine, enhancing waste management strategies, strengthening the fuel monitoring and usage program, and shifting to cleaner marine diesel fuel. In addition, as part of the construction of the new North Sydney terminal building, the Corporation implemented a number of environmentally friendly and energy efficient designs into the structure that will save energy and encourage a more positive environmental footprint for the present and the future.

"Marine Atlantic is very pleased with this accomplishment and meeting the high environmental standards of LEED certification," said Kris Parsons, Chair of Marine Atlantic's Board of Directors. "By implementing a number of environmentally friendly and energy efficient strategies, we are demonstrating that additional planning and design work can mean a big difference for the environment."

Through the design and planning stage of the North Sydney terminal building, Marine Atlantic focused on initiatives such as energy efficient lighting, water efficient landscaping, providing electric vehicle plugins, energy efficient heating, low emitting paints and adhesives, water conservation, and indoor air monitoring.

"I would like to congratulate Marine Atlantic on earning LEED Silver Certification for the North Sydney Terminal Building," says Lara Ryan, Regional Director for the Atlantic Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). "Through this project, Marine Atlantic has demonstrated sustainability leadership which sets an example for others in Atlantic Canada. As we move toward a low-carbon economic future, LEED certification will continue to play an integral role in establishing green buildings that have a near and long-term impact on GHG emissions. CaGBC looks forward to continuing to work with government and industry to expand this investment in low-carbon, sustainable and healthy LEED buildings in the region."

"Marine Atlantic's North Sydney terminal building offers modern features and amenities and is popular with our customers," said Paul Griffin, President and CEO of Marine Atlantic. "Having the building recognized as an environmental leader is another example of the Corporation's commitment to limiting the impact that our operations have on the environment in which our service operates."
