Travelling with an Electric Vehicle

Marine Atlantic is committed to providing our passengers with a safe journey. Following Transport Canada's guidance, our priority is to accurately identify all alternate fuel vehicles on our vessels.

Upon arrival at the terminal, passengers driving an electric vehicle, including a hybrid, will be given an “EV” card to display in their window and will be parked in a designated EV lane to assist our team during the boarding process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Marine Atlantic asking me if I have an alternative fuel vehicle?

Marine Atlantic transports a variety of vehicle types including those with combustion, alternative fuel, electric, and hybrid propulsion. We follow Canadian and international regulations and guidance for the safe carriage of vehicles and other cargo, as well as emergency response.

Transport Canada has issued guidance to ferry operators concerning their transport. One of the recommendations is that the number and location of alternative fuel vehicles onboard ferries be identified.

My vehicle is a hybrid, does that count as an electric vehicle?

Yes, like plug-in electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles have similar battery packs and are subject to the same considerations.

How will this affect the loading process? Will it be the same on every sailing?

In preparation for boarding, alternative fuel vehicles will be parked together in a designated lane for identification purposes. In general, the vehicle composition varies on each sailing based on the number and types of vehicles being transported. The specific loading sequence and location of any vehicle, regardless of fuel-type, will be based upon the overall load plan and may vary each time you travel.

I have an accessibility requirement and am driving an alternative fuel vehicle; will this adversely impact my need for early boarding or being close to an elevator?

No. As a passenger with an accessibility need, you will continue to follow the current protocols. As with the process for all alternative fuel vehicles, the information related to your vehicle will be shared with the personnel responsible for identification purposes.

Does Marine Atlantic have chargers at its terminals?

Yes, each terminal has two Level 2 chargers that passengers may use while waiting to board the vessel based on availability. Customers should check in at the ticket counter inside the terminal for further assistance and direction.
